Los Amparito – Dicen (con Nubla)

Los Amparito, a band from Guadalajara, is also the name of a sandwich thats sold on a particular ally there. Los Amparito is led by Carlos Pesina who’s creating wonderfully layers of synth over Spanish guitar. The song “Dicen” feels like hot wind blown in your face from a drive down the freeway (for us in southern California, to Mexico). The guitars maintain the distance from focusing on the song too much, and vocals act as a soft reminder that yes, you are actually listening to something. Although Los Amparito has plenty of songs via SoundCloud, there has yet to be an EP or LP available. Despite the simplicity of “Dicen”, more of their songs have deeper cultural roots too. For example, check out the video for “4500 millones de años de soledad” [45 million years of solitude] featuring home movies as well as civil and military footage. I personally don’t come across a lot of indie-electro-folk music from hispanic artists (not looking hard enough), but Los Amparito pulls it together beautifully. Hopeful for a debut LP soon.

Lana Del Rey – “Blue Jeans” (Smims&Belle Remix) (feat. Azealia Banks)

I woke up this morning with the intention of finding a bunch of new music, since it is midterm season and I need a bunch of new music to keep my spirits up as I read all of the books I have been putting off since the beginning of the quarter. Luckily, finding music today was pretty easy. As I opened my email, I saw this remix of “Blue Jeans”, originally performed by Lana Del Rey. Unimpressed by Lana, I quickly skimmed the description and when my eyes hit “Azealia Banks”, I literally gasped.
Ever since I wrote about Banks a few weeks ago, I have been obsessed with this up-and-comer, so obviously, I began playing this remix for the sole intent of getting to her verse.
As I waited for Banks to start spittin’, I was actually extremely pleased by what I heard. This is far from the actual “Blue Jeans” and was a much more chopped version of the song, and the backing is completely changed to an electronic-based beat. Rey’s really annoying and whiny voice is heavily effected by Smims&Belle and, as the song goes on, Rey eventually is only singing “gangster” over and over in different pitches and lengths. And then Banks appears and all hell breaks lose. The beat really starts bumping, some tech taps come in, a hint of deck swipings, dub-step builds and, of course, a bunch of crazy bass.
Banks (obviously) kills it on this track, and spits like she does not give a fuck (which she probably doesn’t, judging from what I have seen on Twitter). Because of the repeating “gangster” from Rey, Banks references it a few times, with my favorite line being “gangsters not dead, i raised him”. Her voice is perfect in this, and every line has that same quick style like the rest of her songs.

Honestly, I could keep fan girling out over this song, but I think it is better if you listen and judge for yourself.

Think it is dope? Think it is whack? Lemme know in the comments!

DJ SweekUh – “Hoodie’s Fun. Ex Girl”

This song is a nice combination of Fun., The Temptations, Timeflies and Hoodie Allen. Although these songs may seem like kind of a random combination, DJ Sweekuh makes it all seem to work. Considering Hoodie Allen’s first feature length CD just came out last week, it is nice to see him getting some recognition on recent mashups. Also, who doesn’t love The Temptations and Fun.?

Ladyhawke – “Sunday Drive” (Scissor Sisters Remix)

This Scissor Sisters remix of Ladyhawke’s “Sunday Drive” is a beautiful song that I can only describe as dreamy and whimsical. The Scissor Sisters hype up this lax and lazy Sunday song into a much more dramatic and Saturday night hype track. Both versions of the song are amazing, but check out the Scissor Sisters remix below.

Dntel – “Bright Night”

Dntel has always been on my radar ever since he did a song with Bright Eyes (my favorite artist of all time…sorry Kanye), and I was entranced by the experimental plinking, random start and stops of the beat and the heavily edited vocals. Dntel is now coming out with Aimlessness; his first studio release since 2010.

“Bright Night” is the first released song off of Aimlessness and gives us a good idea of how the rest of the album is going to be. I am a huge fan, and cannot wait for Aimlessness to hit the interwebs, but check it out for yourself. Stream “Bright Night” below.

Into the AM / Yost Theater Presents: AC Slater & Ecto Cooler

Once again, I find myself hitting up a few friends & prepping for another heavy bass night. AC Slater (T&B / Party Like Us) is taking over the Yost Theater tonight in Santa Ana. I didn’t plan on this due to my grandfathers funeral this morning, but truly life goes on & I feel very inspired at the moment to keep doing what I’m doing. Nevertheless I have been Aaron’s fan since I became a dj in ’08. Since then I have only missed one of his sets in LA/ Cali. I’m a hardcore heavy bass junkie, by heavy bass I don’t just mean Dubstep. I speak more so for Heavy Bass music all around. Anywhere from Old bangin Baltimore Club, Electro House (or what was known as Fidget), Philly Club, House, Dirty Dutch, Dubstep & Tropical Heavy Bass (Refer to Zombies For Money), the works. AC Slater won’t be the only one rocking the house, my mate Ecto Cooler (Derek Finn) is playing 11:15 – 12:30 (before AC Slater), I just got a buz from him on my Facebook account. It is a great feeling supporting one of my favorite producers of all time & a good friend. Cheers, its time to RAGE.
