The-Dream – “Tron”

The-Dream blessed us with a 4m30 trap song full of intergalactic sounds could make the most pretentious of rap fans dance. This probably is a little too out there for The-Dream’s upcoming full length, but in the meantime, I will be over here getting together a twerk team.

Check out The-Dream’s “Tron” below and get ready to blast off.

Yasiin Bey – “Bey”

Yasiin Bey, formerly Mos Def, continues with his Top 40 Underdog Series by releasing “Bey” today. “Bey” straight up takes (no samples here) the beat of “John“, a 2011 track by Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. The song is alright (even though the internet would have you thinking differently), but I do wish more of his Top 40 Underdog songs would be more like “Ni**as in Poorest“; it is interesting to note that his songs seem to be coming out whenever he feels like it. “Ni**as in Poorest” came out on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, and “Bey” came out today, which would have been Biggie’s 40th birthday. Just because of that, I have to give the song props.

Also, can we just take a second to appreciate this album cover? Those are some nice vintage Gucci loafers Yasiin, damn.

Lana Del Rey – “Blue Jeans” (Smims&Belle Remix) (feat. Azealia Banks)

I woke up this morning with the intention of finding a bunch of new music, since it is midterm season and I need a bunch of new music to keep my spirits up as I read all of the books I have been putting off since the beginning of the quarter. Luckily, finding music today was pretty easy. As I opened my email, I saw this remix of “Blue Jeans”, originally performed by Lana Del Rey. Unimpressed by Lana, I quickly skimmed the description and when my eyes hit “Azealia Banks”, I literally gasped.
Ever since I wrote about Banks a few weeks ago, I have been obsessed with this up-and-comer, so obviously, I began playing this remix for the sole intent of getting to her verse.
As I waited for Banks to start spittin’, I was actually extremely pleased by what I heard. This is far from the actual “Blue Jeans” and was a much more chopped version of the song, and the backing is completely changed to an electronic-based beat. Rey’s really annoying and whiny voice is heavily effected by Smims&Belle and, as the song goes on, Rey eventually is only singing “gangster” over and over in different pitches and lengths. And then Banks appears and all hell breaks lose. The beat really starts bumping, some tech taps come in, a hint of deck swipings, dub-step builds and, of course, a bunch of crazy bass.
Banks (obviously) kills it on this track, and spits like she does not give a fuck (which she probably doesn’t, judging from what I have seen on Twitter). Because of the repeating “gangster” from Rey, Banks references it a few times, with my favorite line being “gangsters not dead, i raised him”. Her voice is perfect in this, and every line has that same quick style like the rest of her songs.

Honestly, I could keep fan girling out over this song, but I think it is better if you listen and judge for yourself.

Think it is dope? Think it is whack? Lemme know in the comments!

The Weeknd & Heartbreak

Has anyone heard of The Weeknd? If you’re one of Drake’s 2 million twitter followers, chances are that you’ve already heard of the Toronto based r&b singer also known as Abel Tesfaye. The Canadian rapstar has been hyping them up lately at his shows,  also mentioning them on his blog and twitter account. The Weeknd started off as a silent project when Abel leaked the three songs into a YouTube account. With Drake’s help, The Weeknd quickly won the heart of bloggers as they labeled it “Hipster R&B” and “PBR&B” which I personally think is stupid . What makes this music different from others is the haunting downtempo beats that’s accompanied by dark and sensual lyrics about lust, drugs, hurt, and sex. Now with a strong cult following , The Weekend has released their 9 – track album titled “House Of Balloons” on their Official Website.

I have to admit,  The Weeknd has been one of the best things that happened to r&b music along with the rise of Frank Ocean and there’s no sign of stopping here. Abel has already confirmed two follow ups to “House Of Balloons”, one for Summer (Thursday) and one for Autumn (Echoes Of Silence). I’ll leave you with the latest video from, “The Morning” which is on heavy rotation on my iPod right now.

I want to also quickly mention David Heartbreak , the Brooklyn born producer from North Carolina has just released his remix of The Weeknd’s “Rolling Stone” track from the House Of Ballons mixtape. This remix will be featured on his Moombahsoul compilation which will be posted here on Whatsgoodwithit as soon as more information unveils.

Creep – “Days” Video

I found out about Creep a while ago from watching an interview with Fischerspooner, and their track “Days” made my Best of 2010 list. Here’s their debut video, directed by Warren Fischer (of Fischerspooner).

CREEP – “Days” Featuring Romy from the xx

CREEP is a DJ duo/production group based in New York. I heard about them from an interview where Warren Fischer from Fischerspooner says he is directing the video for their song “Days.” The track features vocals from Romy from the xx who provides vocals that are so fitting to the song. The single drops tomorrow Dec. 20th, 2010 on the Young Turks label.

Mansions On The Moon – Paradise Falls

Well, get it while it’s hot. Mansions On The Moon is and LA based trio that has recently been signed to Star Track (N.E.R.D’s record label. Mmm, Pharrell). Their mixtape “Paradise Falls” which is presented by Benzi and Diplo, features a few names you’ll be pleased to read: Deadmau5, Xaphoon Jones (via Chiddy Bang), and my personal favorite, Washed Out.

Check out Benzi’s website to download “Paradise Falls”.

“Daydream” Sampled… Over and Over…

Dirty Heads – Any Port in a Storm

I have been a loyal Dirty Heads fan since 2006, and I’m proud of it. They are the first group I’ve known to ever describe themselves as “trip-hop” and stick by it. Dirty Heads aka Duddy B and Dirty J are from Huntington Beach, California. Their songs have appeared in the animated film Surf’s Up, but you have probably heard of DH recently for their song “Lay Me Down” with Rome. They recently played KROQ’s Weenie Roast and I’m actually surprised it took them this long to gain as much recognition that they have. Then again, I’m glad they have yet to blow up and sell-out, I’m not ready for that yet.
