Marcè Reazon – “Rain” ft. Euro League

This song begins with crickets, breezes into a distant woman’s vocal, and then breaks in with elegantly spoken rap. Marcè Reazon keeps a river running type flow in the producing of this song, and there is never a misstep or wrong note. Complete with piano appearances, fluid electronic effects, and some barely-noticeable-but-still-beautiful-singing in the background, Marcè really outdid himself with this one. The verses throughout the entire track are solid as well and help aid with the head bopping the song demands, but the real stand out in this song is the beat. Beauty has been defined, and you can find it in Marcè Reazon’s “Rain”. Get to know this Long Beach native now so you can say “I remember when” when he is gracing the covers of magazines and Billboard charts.

CocoRosie – “After the Afterlife”

I am still not sure if I am invading on CocoRosie’s recording session in her bedroom by listening to this or not, but it sure does have an intimiate sound with the comfort of D.I.Y. ethics (none of that mainstream recording equipment here, man). “After the Afterlife” appears to be coming out on their next full length CD which is slated for May 27th, and entitled Tales of a Grass Widow. If the rest of the CD is anything like this track, then you can definitely count me in. Check out “After the Afterlife” below!

SZA – “Aftermath”

SZA’s “Aftermath” is what you get when you blend a cup of smoky haze, an ounce fresh lyrics, and a dash of rainbow sprinkles. This creamy goodness is exactly what you need after a huge meal, and just want to drift off to sleep. A head-nodding, lo-fi, soulful song about how “livin as a unicorn gets so lonely”, “Aftermath” is a hip-twistin’ slow ass jam.

But, before you listen to the song, I would like to leave you with the opening verse that SZA drops on you: “I apologize for waiting to tell you for so long that I am not human … / I am made of bacon, Fairy tales / pixie dust I don’t feel / I hung myself and didnt die i am omnipotent / I’m alive I’m not real I’m alive”. If that’s not next level, then I really am not sure what is.

Check out SZA’s “Aftermath” below, and get ready for her full length, S, in exactly one week from now.

Julian Cruz – “Get Yours”

Yes! Finally! Another XO affiliated Canadian to become obsessed with. May I present to you, Julian Cruz. Employing a low-key and chilled out producing style, complete with breathy lyrics and a guitar warbling in the background, Cruz created a great song to get completely lost in. “Get Yours” is his latest release since his mixtape Black Heart, and it is good to see that, if his other songs are anything like this, his sophomore effort will not disappoint! Sky Ferreira – “Lost In My Bedroom” Video

Sky Ferreira is basically my personal favorite “anti-Lana del Rey”. And with saying that, I feel like I may have just lost all of the street cred that I may have ever accidentally stumbled upon. What I mean by that is while every little awkward “quirk” about Lana seems to me to have been created by the industry, man, Ferreira’s weirdness seems all together genuine. Either way, Ferreira is cool, collected and maybe a herion addict all of which you can tell from her twinkling song, “Lost in My Bedroom”, and the somewhat eerie music video that goes along with it. Also, just a quick touch of irony, the video goes up to 1080p in video quality, but still looks just as gritty as the 480p.

This song and video are both completely fantastic with their somewhat 80s throwback feel, the soothing tones of Ferreira’s voice and the plinking synth which continues throughout the entire song. Check out the song and video below (which I jacked from Pitchfork. Do I gain my cred back because of that?):

Nosaj Thing – “Eclipse/Blue” Official Video

Jason (Nosaj Thing) had announced the video for “Eclipse/Blue” would be out in a few days and I didn’t know what to expect, partially because he doesn’t have many out for Drift. What I do know is Nosaj Thing always has great visual effects when he plays, and after support from The Creators Project, and help from Daito Manabe, takcom, Satoru Higa, and MIKIKO, it has been translated to this gorgeous music video, accompanied by a lyric dancer (MIKIKO) as a centerpiece.

COVER FRIDAYS: Bat for Lashes – “We Found Love” Cover

Okay, okay, so this song has been out for a while. But since Bat for Lashes’ newest album, The Haunted Man, is coming out on October 23rd, I thought that I could postpone this post until Cover Friday. As you all know, “We Found Love” is an annoyingly catchy song by Rihanna, but as you all might not know, Bat For Lashes’ cover is a slowed down, silky smooth version of the dance-infused original. So without further adieu, enjoy BFL’s chilled out version of “We Found Love” below.

Capital Cities – “Nothing Compares 2 U”

Capital Cities takes a stab at Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” by throwing in some up-beat vocals and an electronic, yet still elegant in an indie sense, feel onto the track. Although my favorite use of “Nothing Compares 2 U” will always be Girl Talk’s “Play Your Part Pt. 1” (skip to 3:50 to hear the Sinead part. You’ll have to sit through a little bit of Lil’ Wayne, but it is worth it), Capital Cities does a really great job of creating a more updated, and more fun version of Sinead’s otherwise really sad song. In order to describe this track (and the band in general) their Soundcloud account decided to use probably the best turn of phrase: “Their electronic-infused pop rock represents all that is right in modern music making and makes the perfect soundscape for a day at the beach–or a night in the dark part of town–as long as you’re ready to dance.”

If you are in the mood to move, check out Capital Cities’ version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” below.

SubtleSkeptics feat. Shine Fu – “Blue Jeans” (Lana del Rey Cover)

Ever since I found this song about two hours ago, it has been on repeat. Usually when I hear a cool song, I listen to it for a little while and see if it is worthy of its own post, or if it is just a passing fad. However, as soon as I heard this song all the way through for the second time, I knew it deserved nothing less than its own feature on a much more popular website. But, for the time being, here is my take on SubtleSkeptics’ version of “Blue Jeans”.
