JD Samson and Johanna Fateman of Le Tigre, with Emily Roysdon, Michael O’Neill, and Ginger Brooks Takahashi, have a new band called MEN that focuses on the energy of dance music and live performance. Their album Talk About Body recently released February 1st and you’ll be able to catch them at Coachella (that’s if you got tickets), or if you can’t wait, they’ll be at Echoplex March 26th.

Nam June Paik Retrospective at Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool and FACT are exhibiting a retrospective of one of my favorite video/media artists, Nam June Paik from Dec. 17, 2010 until Mar. 13, 2011.

Video artist, performance artist, composer and visionary: Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. Tate Liverpool, in collaboration with FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) present the first major retrospective since the artist’s death, and the first exhibition of Paik’s work in the UK since 1988.

I would love to go and experience over 90 pieces of his art from the godfather of video art who influenced everything from MTV graphics to modern video artists such as Chris Cunningham (check his Gil Scott-Heron video piece at MoMA here), so if any of you are in the UK, please don’t miss it. Watch the video above from Wallpaper to hear the curators speak about the exhibit.

Heffington Moves MOCA – Heavy Metal Parking Lot

Dancer and performance artist Ryan Heffington had a three month residency at MOCA where he put on performances that melded art, dance, and music. I attended the last performance of the residency, which was inspired by the short film “Heavy Metal Parking Lot.” The film from 1986 captured and interviewed several Judas Priest fans tailgating outside the venue, pre-Halford-coming-out era. The performance was nothing like the short film, but more a large gathering of spectators on the streets (literally) of Los Angeles, watching dancers rock out to heavily-driven, high energy music in costume.

The video above features the segment of Los Angeles band We Are the World performing a new song. If you can handle it, watch it at 720p because it looks that much more amazing.

Banksy – Pier Pressure

I watched the full length documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop earlier this year, so I was delighted to find a couple new short pieces by Banksy on his YouTube channel. The one above is my favorite out of the two (the other features a man holding a “DRUGS FOR SALE” sign and hassles Prince Charles about rehempifying the UK. His work is phenomenal.

LARST’s Upcoming Shows

Got an earful of LA River Swim Team at our launch party?  If you didn’t, no sweat,  for they have a couple of shows coming up within the next couple of weeks.  If you DID hear them, you already know how awesome they are, so come support!  Here are the dates and places:

August 25th @ Good Hurt, Venice

August 28th @ WJC Adult Day Program Center, Wilmington (Benefit for WE CAN)

September 1st @ The Cat Club, Hollywood (with our friends at Gold Lion, 21+)

These dates will also be posted on our events calendar.  Note that the second date is an event for The Wilmington Enrichment Community Artist Network, which promotes culture and the arts in the Wilmington community.  WE CAN‘s a favorite amongst us as well as LARST so show them some love!

The third date is for the event “Tits and Acid” put on by our sexy friends at Gold Lion.  Our very own ARSNL will also be playing at the event alongside LARST and many other talents that will surely keep you moving. Gold Lion never disappoints, so grab your fake ID and roll thru!   Here’s a link to the Facebook event.

If you wanna get familiar with LARST, check out their profile on our “Friends” section.  See you at the shows!

We Are The World

The moment I saw We Are The World perform at The Smell in early January 2009, I knew they were onto something good. Nevermind the horrible sound quality of the venue, with harsh reverberations coming off the concrete walls, or the fact that the stage is difficult to catch a clear glance of the band. These guys rocked it that night.

Resurging onto my playlist after gaining popularity in the outside music world (as opposed to my local LA band music world) by releasing exclusive videos on Stereogum, their album last April through Manimal Vinyl, and a nod from Lady Gaga on her Twitter, dubbing them her “favorite band,” I feel like an element is missing when I listen to them at home. If you have trouble envisioning their sound in your head, think The Knife and Fever Ray, with a touch of new-wave/industrial beats by the way of Depeche Mode.
