Puro Instinct – Stilyagi

Local band Puro Instinct teamed up with another Los Angeles local Ariel Pink who worked with the band produce their debut album Headbangers in Ecstasy. After watching Drive recently, I feel like this is one of the songs the main character would listen to in his car while driving around LA. AMIRITE?!

All Welcome

The City Of Hawthorne has been the center of attention lately in the South Bay. Just earlier this week, there was an art show that featured great visuals by many artists as well as music performances from both Narc and Damedas . This Saturday those forces will team up with other artists to perform at the first ever “All Welcome” event at The Den in Hawthorne. Be sure to also check Capitan Fantasma, the solo project of our LA River Swim Team friend, Tony Diaz.

More info about the event can be found here .

Be sure to like “All Welcome” on Facebook here.

I leave you with “El Verano 2011″ (Summer of 2011), a new Damedas tune to start your day off right with an upbeat mood. An article was written about him on The Daily Breeze and I can’t agree anymore when the writer compares his music to the sounds of Panda Bear and El Guincho. Good job Felipe Delgadillo! Capsolin Headlines @ Chain Reaction this Saturday!

Didn’t get the tickets to Major Rager!? Fear naught, ’cause our old friends Capsolin are headlining at Chain Reaction this Saturday, the 19th.  This is their biggest show yet AND the event is all ages, so you can bring your kids, nieces and nephews, your underaged girlfriend, or any other form of young nuggets you would like to have flayed with Capsolin’s musical goodness.  Are there other bands there?  Uh, yeah.  Lots.  Like I the Mighty, The Vinyl Thieves, K Sera, The Body Rampant, and Goodnight Sunrise.  Never heard of them before?  Well you should go check ‘em out, since tickets are only ten bucks pre-sale and something around that price at the door.

It’ll be the cheapest, most entertaining thing you could do on a Saturday night, especially if you lost your ID the night before while you were getting grinded on by that portly lady at the Key Club.  Event starts at 7pm.  Check out the Facebook event page for more info.

Set times:

7:00 – 7:25 / Goodnight Sunrise
7:35 – 8:00 / The Body Rampant
8:10 – 8:35 / K Sera
8:45 – 9:10 / I the Mighty
9:20 – 9:45 / The Vinyl Thieves
10:00 – end / Capsolin

howardAmb – HOWeirdiAM

LA’s multi-instrumental experimentalists howardAmb share their latest release as a digital download at howardamb.com (click the image on their website to download). They play at The Smell on February 11th, 9pm with a stellar line up: White Widow, Magick Orchids, and EXTRA. It is not to be missed.

New Track: SlimeCity – “Alexandra”

This is hot off the press. SlimeCity just released “Alexandra,” a chill, minimalist dubstep track that you can relax to when listening at low volumes, or groove to when turned up LOUD. Listen/download below from SoundCloud.

Heffington Moves MOCA – Heavy Metal Parking Lot

Dancer and performance artist Ryan Heffington had a three month residency at MOCA where he put on performances that melded art, dance, and music. I attended the last performance of the residency, which was inspired by the short film “Heavy Metal Parking Lot.” The film from 1986 captured and interviewed several Judas Priest fans tailgating outside the venue, pre-Halford-coming-out era. The performance was nothing like the short film, but more a large gathering of spectators on the streets (literally) of Los Angeles, watching dancers rock out to heavily-driven, high energy music in costume.

The video above features the segment of Los Angeles band We Are the World performing a new song. If you can handle it, watch it at 720p because it looks that much more amazing.

LA River Swim Team’s new Demo!

This past Saturday, my boys of LA River Swim Team had a little shindig for the release of their first four-track EP.  There are a couple of classics on it, including “By My Side” and “Just Like That” (you might have heard if you’ve visited our “Friends” section and checked them out).  The other newer tracks include “Burn the City Down” and “San Pedro”, both equally hot as their previous releases.

Check out their Bandcamp page to donate and download their full demo.  Keep up the good work, boys!

Interview : Eliquate

Before starting their Pacific Northwest tour, a few members of Eliquate (Cosmo Stevens, Elliot Wright and Jamie Schnetzler) took the time to talk with WGWIt about their new album Ark Rhythm, their influences, and moist importantly, their facial hair.

WGWIt: I love all your guys’ beards, is that a requirement to be in the band?

EW: Yeah we’re touring in the Pacific Northwest so we figured if were going to be going up there we need to look grizzly. Everyone has to have one or else you’ll be kicked out. We’ve got flannel and beanies, and we’re ready to rock. We leave the 22nd and we’ll be doing 14 shows in 18 days (view tour dates at Eliquate.com) and then after this tour we’ll be going back down south.

CS: I’m actually from Southern California, Ventura County/LA area. We’re going to be down South in the winter, late December and January, and this is all to promote Ark Rhythm.

WGWIt: Is Ark Rhythm just a collection of songs or is it more of a narrative?

EW: I could explain how all the songs tie together and how thematically they kinda work together, but that would probably take up the rest of our time. The beauty of music and literature is that they can be interpretive. I definitely had intent when I wrote all of the lyrics, whether that intent be to sort of create a feeling, capture a story, to get people pissed, or even make myself sound cool –which is what a lot of hip hop is- but I don’t know as a consistent theme.

CS: It will all be on the DVD. We’re working on putting together a press kit with an Eliquate t-shirt, stickers, sweatshirt, we’ll have them available online.

Listen to Ark Rhythm here and read the rest of the interview after the jump!

Ferraby Lionheart – Harry and Bess

Rainn Wilson stars in the new video recently released by Ferraby Lionheart for the track “Harry and Bess.” I enjoyed watching the awkwardness Ferraby has with the camera in certain shots while Rainn goofs off in his antiquated tuxedo. Ferraby was discovered by Jon Brion who asked him to play with him at the Largo, and has since cultivated his folky, acoustic, baroque pop style that sometimes transports you to the era of the 60s, or the backwoods of mid-west.

I’ve yet to catch one of Ferraby Lionheart’s shows, and if you haven’t either, consider us lucky because he’ll be playing two LA dates next month:

OCT 4
Largo at the Coronet

OCT 5

TETINE x howardAmb: “Yr Daughter Lies”

Diplo’s documentary Favela on Blast, about Funk Carioca from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, reminded me of the Brazilian band Tetine. They played an integral role spreading the Funk Carioca to US and Europe with their compilation Slum Dunk Presents Funk Carioca, released in 2004. Shortly after, they released L.I.C.K. My Favela, which includes a special collaboration with Deize Tigrona, an MC who was featured in the documentary.

Earlier this year, Tetine released their album From a Forest Near You and a new Tropical Punk 12″ vinyl EP, both featuring the addicting dance track, “Yr Daughter Lies.” The song is a collaboration between Tetine and LA based experimental electronic band, howardAmb. The track also appears on howardAmb’s MINI STERIOS MEGA MIX, if you can find it.

Turn your volume up and dance to this:
