CocoRosie – “After the Afterlife”

I am still not sure if I am invading on CocoRosie’s recording session in her bedroom by listening to this or not, but it sure does have an intimiate sound with the comfort of D.I.Y. ethics (none of that mainstream recording equipment here, man). “After the Afterlife” appears to be coming out on their next full length CD which is slated for May 27th, and entitled Tales of a Grass Widow. If the rest of the CD is anything like this track, then you can definitely count me in. Check out “After the Afterlife” below!

Toughcats – “Somebody Old” Music Video

The Toughcats from Maine have an original sound, energy and magnetic vibe that make you want to listen to their songs in any mood. They just released a new music video for their song “Somebody Old” from their album Run from the Mill, which you can view below. You’ll love it if you’re a fan of stop motion.

Alex Turner – Submarine EP

You read right my friends, Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, has released a six song EP for a short film entitled “Submarine”. The film is a coming of age comedy-drama which revolves around a young man “who believes he is a tortured literary genius and fantasises about an outpouring of grief at his untimely death, when he is in fact socially inept, awkward and unpopular.” The film debuted at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival. Though the film was received well by critics what’s really exciting about this project is Turner’s first solo effort; a stripped down, intimate, acoustic series of songs that showcase the brilliant nature of Turner’s lyrics. If you have doubts about the lyrical content of the next Monkeys album “Suck It and See,” may those be put to rest by the songs presented in this fine EP. Here’s Piledriver Waltz, the closing track on the EP (it will also be featured on “Suck It and See” in June

Yellow Ostrich – WHALE

Yellow Ostrich is the solo project of Alex Schaaf (of the Chairs) which now consists of three members. He makes music using his four track recorder which is why “WHALE” sounds as raw as it does. It’s nice though, feels fresh, the drumming is prominent and tribal sounding and the chorus has light harmonies that accentuate the chorus. “WHALE” comes to your ears from The Mistress which can be downloaded here! Yellow Ostrich is currently playing SXSW but will be in Los Angeles at The Echo March 25th. Be there!

Lost and Sound – Paul & Linda McCartney: Ram

Paul & Linda McCartney - Ram

Last week I payed homage to My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. This week, I bring you a buried pop-folk classic: Ram.

When most think of any music post-Beatles, it’s usually John Lennon’s Imagine album…and if anything relating to “Wings” comes up, well, most have lost interest already. However, before Mr. McCartney had his Wings project, him and “lovely” Linda went to work on their first solo album simply titled, “McCartney.” It was somewhat well received and seen as more of an album built up of lost Beatles era McCartney demos. However, nobody knew what Paul had in store for them in 1971: Ram, a behemoth of poppy folk rock that was too ahead of it’s time to be considered even remotely “good.” In fact, Rolling Stone (upon the album’s release) deemed the album “monumentally irrelevant.” This reminds me of how Rolling Stone also hated the first two Led Zeppelin albums, but then 20-30 years later put them on their list of greatest albums ever (yep, journalism at it’s finest). Anyways, Ram is the dark horse, the unsung hero of McCartney’s catalog. Continue reading

99 Problems Music Video

I’ve stumbled across a few good music videos today, this one being a live version of Hugo’s 99 Problems. If you haven’t heard this song I can tell you one thing, you gonna love it. It’s perfect getting over a girl music. Below is both the live music video, along with the original, which is too badass not to have on our blog.

Matisyahu – Miracle (Acoustic)

Aw, hell yeah! Matisyahu, holding it down for Jews during this holiday season where we (yes we, myself included, holla! Or should I say, challah! [Jewish puns]) get overlooked. Anyway, there’s a few setbacks to being Jewish during this season: 1. The fact that I can’t rock out for an entire month to Chanukkah jams on the radio. 2. I don’t walk into department stores anticipating to hear my favorite Hanukkah song. 3. And shut up Adam Sandler, you should have stopped after the first Chanukah song. While I haven’t tuned into Matusyahu for a bit, I think that he’s a great artist. This acoustic version of the song captures how beautiful his voice is. Unfortunately, I missed the Channukkah cut off by 1 day, but enjoy the track anyways. Of course, it’s about the miracle that was and is Hanukka. For the record, there’s 16 ways to spell Chanuka. So don’t worry, you’re probably not spelling it wrong.
