The Man With the Iron Fists Trailer

Here at WGWI, we talked about Tarantino before and about just how awesome Django Unchained looks…but compared to The Man with the Iron Fists, I am not sure how Django Unchained will hold up. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have lived in Irvine now for two years, the fact that this has Lucy Liu in it, and a Wu Tang Clan member is the director and screenwriter, but The Man With the Iron Fist is going to be one hell of a movie.

In true Eli Roth style, the script is ridiculous and Grindhouse-y, which is perfect for everyone who enjoyed Machete and Death Race, but for the rest of you, this is not a movie for you. Being ridiculous for the shock value is the device used all throughout this movie, and it is best to not analyze it and just enjoy the ride.

Going just by the trailer, the soundtrack to The Man with the Iron Fists is going to be just as awesome as the movie itself. Not only does the trailer include songs from the Black Keys, Wiz Khalifa, Wu-Tang Clan, but also (wait for it…) Kanye West (!) and RZA himself. All the more reason to get pumped for this release.

Oh, also, Russel Crowe is in this?

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained Trailer

If you know anything about me, you know that I am majorly in love with Tarantino. I saw Inglorious Basterds opening day and have seen every other Tarantino movie at least three times. I even saw the midnight showing of Machete just because Tarantino was somewhat related to the movie. Therefore, when the Django Unchained trailer came out yesterday, I nearly had a heart attack. Everything about it, the Spaghetti Western style, the dialogue, a soundtrack including Johnny Cash and James Brown, a southern Leonardo DiCaprio…how can you not love it? If you are living under a rock, you can watch it for the first time below, or, if you are a crazy fan too, feel free to enjoy the trailer once more.

The Great Gatsby Trailer

Okay, okay, so this is not a music post. But it is a modern randition of the 1920s classic book, The Great Gatsby, has Leonardo DiCapro AND has “No Church in the Wild” and “Love is Blindness” in the trailer. Sure, a lot of people are mad that the movie is not featuring classic jazz music and I can see their point, but honestly, since this movie is basically just an esthetically pleasing modern version of the 1920s rather than the ACTUAL 1920s…I feel like the music is fine. Or maybe I am just biased because their music choices are right up my alley. Or perhaps I am just blinded by my love for Leonardo.

“Page 23″ Created by Jeroen Houben, Tim Arts & Stefan van den Boogaard

“Page 23″ is a short film recently awarded with “Best Film” from the 48 Hour Film Project in Utrecht (Netherlands). We base our social lives on commodities symbolic of our social status, everything is a price tag (think Fight Club). This film takes a peek into what life is like for the models who aid in selling these commodities to us by getting into their personal life, inside the magazine. It’s a fascinating concept, I’d be thrilled to see it expanded to a longer feature film, perhaps a future project for the three creators? Head to the “Page 23″ homepage for more info.

Movie: “Bunny and the Bull”

Bunny and the Bear, Paul King, The Mightly Boosh

“Bunny and the Bull”, directed by Pual King, is the story of Stephen Turnball’s (Edward Hogg) loss of both a lover and a best friend and how he copes (or lack of coping) with such loss. It’s a surreal type of movie, combining different mediums of sets and filming techniques. The audience is introduced to Stephen and his horder-esque habits. He hasn’t left his flat in months. Due to an infestation, he faces the terrifying reality of leaving his flat for the first time. However, before Stephen embarks on any journey, he takes a trip into his subconscious and recalls a time when him and Bunny (Simon Farnaby) placed a good bet and went on e Euro-trip. On their trip they meet Melanie (Madeleine Worrall), whom Stephen develops strong feelings for. Throughout the flashback of their Euro-trip, Bunny visits Stephen’s flat and combs through all of his belongings which are stacked, dated, and squeezed in every inch of his apartment. As the two go through the belongings, the audience begins to understand why Stephen has yet to leave his flat, as well as his emotional attachment to Bunny and Melanie. By the end of the flashback journey, we understand how Bunny’s life was taken while on their trip and many adventures and also that Bunny’s current presence of Bunny is really a projection.

I’m not doing this movie nearly as much justice as it deserves. It’s a comedy, has a small romance that doesn’t overpower the story, great visual effects, and as a whole is a very interesting approach to storytelling. Basically, if you liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Science of SLeep and Fight Club; go watch Bunny and the Bull.

Attack the Block

It’s looking like this year will be remembered as the year of the alien invasion movies. So far we’ve had Battle: Los Angeles, Transformers 3, Super 8, Cowboys and Aliens, and more. However, the best alien invasion movie so far this year is one most people might not have even heard of yet.

Attack the Block is an independent science fiction film from London, produced by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and directed by newcomer Joe Cornish. The film is about a group of South London hoodlums in an apartment complex called “the Block” who have to fight off an alien invasion. It’s not a particularly new plot, but it’s the way that it’s handled that makes it unique.

Unlike most adventure films of this sort, the audience is not meant to like the kids from the beginning. Pest, Dennis, Jerome, Biggz and their leader Moses are not the typical heroes you’re used to. The first scene of the movie involves the group of wannabe-gangsters mugging a helpless woman as she walks home from work. The characters are unlikeable at the start, but when the first alien crashes to earth and the kids go after it, you begin to understand their personalities and motives a bit more.

The aliens themselves are much different that your average alien invasion film. The characters in the movie describe them as “giant, black ape-wolf looking things” which is a fairly accurate portrait of what they look like. The monsters are ape-like black blobs with no eyes and fluorescent glowing blue teeth. Other than the teeth, they’re almost impossible to see at night, which adds to the suspense quite a bit.

Green With Envy

I just stumbled across this trailer for a movie called Green With Envy which stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams, and Kermit the Frog. Yes, Kermit the Frog. Which also means that this is no movie, it is a Muppets movie. You can watch the video below to get more of the storyline but what I’m really excited for is the fact that its 1. Jason Segel and Amy Adams, 2. Muppets, 3. a possible musical (or at least a few songs) and, 4. going to be hilarious because Jason wouldn’t let it be any other way. Even the trailer pokes fun at itself. It will be in theatres November 23rd.

The Beastie Boys have released a trailer for their star-studded 30 minute music video Fight for Your Right-Revisited.  The film stars Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, and Elijah Wood as Mike D,MCA and Ad-Rock, who are visited by the future versions of themselves (played by Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Jack Black.)  The film premiered at Sundance and it going to be released with the Beastie Boys new album Hot Sauce Committee part Two on May 3rd.  The guest stars in this thing are amazing.  I won’t ruin it by telling you who else shows up in this short 2-minute video.

Visit their website for more info.

(Yes that was Will Arnett making an Arrested Development reference. I can’t wait to see this.)

Fight Club is Calvin and Hobbes?

I hadn’t heard of this theory before, but it has been thought that Fight Club parallels the story of Calvin and Hobbes. In case you don’t know, Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip that features a boy and his stuffed animal (which Calvin imagines is real) as they adventure and question life together. And if you’re not sure what Fight Club is, go rent it now. You need to READ THE THEORY HERE to see how the two compare. For example, you’ll see how Hobbes and Tyler are connected and similarities between GROSS and Fight Club. If you don’t want to read, a lovely little video was put together that helps explain it. Pretty interesting.
