I think RCRDLBL.com’s contributor Carter Maness said it best; it sounds “like an 808 [was] submerged in fog” when recording “Swimming Pools (Drank)”. The dark feeling which goes along with the song starts from the very beginning when Kendrick begins describing the many different reasons one decides to turn to liquor (“Some people like the way it feels / Some people wanna kill their sorrows / Some people wanna fit in with the popular / That was my problem”).
The song continues to tell the story of how Kendrick was basically a bitch “babysitting only two or three shots” and some, much more experienced drinker (dranker) came over and basically told him he was a bitch taught him how to handle (something I wish some of the people I party with could learn…Oh well). Maybe if I had a pool of drank, I would be able to coach my friends as well, but until then, I’ll just keep jamming out to this song over and over.
Some other notable things about “Swimming Pools (Drank)” is the fact that he raps pretty quickly (which is always a fun, novelty thing to listen to. Azealia Banks anyone?), and he utilizes the L-to-R fade (check it at 1:33 – 1:40. SOOOO SICK). This is the first single off of his upcoming full length, good kid m.A.A.d city, which is going to be dropping on October 2nd, 2012.
