Kendrick Lamar – “Westside, Right On Time” ft Young Jeezy

You should all know Kendrick Lamar at this point, either because of his excellent single, “Swimming Pools (Drank)” or because he is Dr. Dre’s newest protege. However, if you didn’t know about him before today, well, you now have another reason to recognize him as one of rap’s newest all stars. His second single off of his upcoming full length, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, is “Westside, Right On Time” and it lives up to all expectations. The song has a “Summertime“-esque beat to it, and with Lamar and Jeezy blowing up the vocals on this track, “Westside, Right On Time” is an instand banger.

I really did not need another reason to love Kendrick, but I think “Westside, Right On Time” has done it. Combining the simplicity of a G-Funk beat (a Dre staple) and a few solid verses has created a track that makes us here at WGWI that much more excited for Kendrick’s full length. good kid, m.A.A.d. city will be out in stores on October 2nd, but get in the spirit by listening to “Westside, Right On Time” below.

Rick Ross – “3 Kings” ft. Dr. Dre & Jay Z

It is kind of funny that Rick Rozzay considers himself one of the “kings” of hip-hop, but Jay Z and Dre play along on this song. And, despite the whole “Rick Ross” thing, this song is pretty good! I looooove that Dre just shamelessly promotes his headphones everywhere he goes (even in his Dr. Pepper commercial; I mean SERIOUSLY?!) by dropping the line, “you should be listening to this through my headphones”. Jay delivers and gives Blue Ivy a shout out or two, which is equally as awesome. And there there is Rick. Meh.

This song is going to be on Rick Ross’s upcoming God Forgives, I Don’t. And, um, shouldn’t it be God Forgives; I Don’t? Ugh, the lack of grammatical correctness is frustrating. But anyway…check out the song below.

Kendrick Lamar – “The Recipe” (feat. Dr. Dre)

Kendrick

Kendrick Lamar, member of Black Hippy and recently signed to Interscope by Dr. Dre, is getting ready to release Good Kid in a Mad City, which will be his follow up to Section.80 (which was released last summer, and was amazing). The just dropped the first single for the album, entitled “The Recipe”. In an interview on Big Boy’s Power 106 radio show, Dr. Dre said that the song was first supposed to be called “Women, Weed + Weather” but then it was changed the “The Recipe” because the mix of women, weed and weather is the recipe for happiness (see what they did there? oh Dre, you’re so clever).

The combination of these two very West-Coast rappers creates a quality song that is easy to jam to, but I cannot help but feel that Kendrick toned down his Black Hippy-ness on this track. Hopefully he will still go hard on the album and just felt like he had to lower the intensity to have Dre feature. Check out the track below and let me know what you think of it!

Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg and Akon – Kush

Oh hey, Dr. Dre, where have you been again? Hip hop fans have been waiting anxiously for Dr.Dre’s release of Detox, and last night Dre released “Kush”, which is the first track off the album. I was pleased to see that Dre collaborated with sir Snoop Dogg, a native to my hometown of Long Beach, and also surprised that Akon was on the track as well? Luckily he’s not used too much. Already having some ‘classic’ qualities to it, such as the piano melody (that might remind you of Still D.R.E) and naturally, rapping about pot. Now we just need the rest of the album. We’re ready, Dre.

Ahem, update:
